THE FIRST AND SECOND STATISTICAL ACCOUNTS OF EDINBURGH -

The first Statistical Account of Scotland was first published between 1791-99 at the instigation of Sir John Sinclair. It was compiled from the results of a detailed questionnaire sent to every Church of Scotland minister in Scotland seeking details of the economic and social condition of the parish.

The second Statistical Account of Scotland commissioned in 1834 by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, was first published between 1834-1845. It has not previously been republished.

In this edition are collected both the first and second accounts from all the parishes contained within the present boundaries of the city of Edinburgh. Included are the parishes of central Edinburgh and Leith, Duddingston, Colinton, Cramond, Currie, and Liberton.

Together we are presented with a wealth of contemporary reporting on late 18th and early 19th century Edinburgh and developments during the period. The accounts are from persons with an intimate knowledge of their localities and often of decidedly assertive opinions.
