THE MEDIAEVAL STONE CARVER IN SCOTLAND - Later generations tended casually to assume that the iconoclasts worked with complete thoroughness, eradicating all trace of pre-Reformation ecclesiastical sculpture from the stones of Scotland. How much, in fact, survived the Reformation , whole or in part, was demonstrated by Dr James Richardson, then HM Inspector of Ancient Monuments of Scotland, in his already legendary 1949 Rhind Lectures. This book contains the text of these lectures, illustrated with nearly 130 photographs of examples of the art of the Scottish stone mason.
