WEST HIGHLAND SURVEY: An Essay in Human Ecology - This book represents an attempt to establish the facts of what may be called the West Highland problem. It is a rep[ort of a body established in 1944 by the Development Commission to survey  the West Highlands and Hebrides scientifically, and to assess the factors which have led to a deterioration in social and economic conditions, and of the West Highlands as a satisfying human habitat. The small community of the crofting township, and the parish, were the units observed for all data, so that the final collection of 1040 itemized cards of townships represents a modern Domesday  of a region where little detailed factual information has been available heretofore, and where rapid cultural transition is in process. Each place has been considered in relation to its terrain, climate, flora, and fauna, and to various social and economic factors concerned.
